Lima, Perú. – República Dominicana será la sede en el año 2025 de la X Cumbre de las Américas, el cónclave regional más importante para los países del hemisferio occidental, a ser efectuado bajo la colaboración de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA).
La elección del país para este evento se anunció durante la Reunión Ministerial del Grupo de Revisión de la Implementación de Cumbres (GRIC), realizada este jueves en Lima, Perú, en el marco de la agenda de la 52 Asamblea General de la OEA en la que participó el Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, Roberto Álvarez.
La noticia fue dada a conocer a los Estados miembros por el secretario de Estado de los Estados Unidos de América, Antony Blinken, quien felicitó a República Dominicana por este nuevo compromiso con el multilateralismo.
El canciller Álvarez expresó que el país se compromete en trabajar estrechamente con todos los Estados para llevar a esta cumbre los temas más acuciantes del hemisferio y lograr los mejores resultados posibles.
“República Dominicana está comprometida con el multilateralismo y plenamente convencida de la oportunidad que brindan estos escenarios internacionales. Esa vocación se ha cristalizado en nuestro desempeño y hemos acumulado suficientes experiencias para abocarnos a un evento de esta magnitud”, resaltó el ministro.
República Dominicana ostenta actualmente las presidencias pro tempore del Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA), así como de la Conferencia Iberoamericana, cuya cumbre se realizará en el país en marzo del próximo año.
Sobre esta experiencia para organizar cumbres internacionales, el canciller mencionó algunas de las más relevantes realizadas en el país, como la segunda Cumbre de la Organización de los Estados Africa Caribe Pacífico, en 1999; la decimosegunda Cumbre Iberoamericana, en 2002; las Asambleas Generales de la OEA, en 2006 y 2016, y la quinta Cumbre de Jefes de Estado de la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC), en 2017.
“Por esto, para nuestro país es un honor asumir la responsabilidad de organizar la próxima Cumbre de las Américas, para la cual, como siempre, pondremos todo nuestro empeño y disposición a los fines de llevarla a cabo con el más alto nivel y de manera inclusiva”, puntualizó el diplomático dominicano.
Álvarez hizo un reconocimiento al Gobierno de Estados Unidos de América por iniciar el proceso de Cumbres y haberlo mantenido vigente en el tiempo, al tiempo de afirmar que República Dominicana continuará colaborando estrechamente con esa nación por cumplir con los compromisos asumidos en la IX Cumbre celebrada este 2022 en Los Ángeles, California.
El secretario general de la OEA, Luis Almagro, expresó reconocimiento al trabajo realizado por el Presidente Luis Abinader y el canciller Álvarez para lograr que el país sea sede de la próxima Cumbre de las Américas y aseguró que el evento estará en buenas manos.
En la reunión donde se hizo este anuncio, el Ministro Álvarez estuvo acompañado por el viceministro de Política Exterior Multilateral, Rubén Silié; el embajador representante permanente de República Dominicana ante la OEA, Josué Fiallo; el embajador dominicano en Perú, Alejandro Arias; la directora de Organismos Internacionales del MIREX, María Fernanda Ortega; la ministra consejera de la misión diplomática en la OEA, Érika Álvarez, y el candidato dominicano al Comité Jurídico Interamericano, Julio José Rojas Báez.
